A digital workflow replaces or supplements traditional steps (impression trays, plaster models, hand waxing) with digital records and design. Digital tools do not replace clinical judgement, but they can make planning clearer and results more consistent.
Treatment summary
Digital dentistry in brief
- What it is
- Digital records and computer design that replace or supplement impression trays, plaster models and hand waxing.
- Used for
- Planning bites and implant positions, CAD/CAM crowns, bridges, provisional teeth and splints, and 3D-printed models and guides.
- What is involved
- Scans and records, design reviewed on screen, then milling or printing and a clinical fit.
- For you
- A clearer view of your plan and digital records that can be reused for later adjustments or replacements.
The tools used depend on each case. Digital tools support, and do not replace, clinical judgement.
Digital planning
The planned result can be designed and reviewed on screen before treatment begins, so the bite, tooth positions and, for implants and full mouth rehabilitation, implant positions can be worked out from the final result backwards.
CAD/CAM restorations
With CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing), crowns, bridges, provisional teeth and splints are designed on a computer and then milled or printed.
3D printing
3D printing can be used to make models, surgical guides and parts of prostheses from a digital design.
Digital tools in maxillofacial prosthetics
For facial and intraoral prostheses, digital records can help plan the prosthesis, mirror the unaffected side of the face, design moulds and keep a record that makes remakes easier. Traditional hand sculpting and colour matching remain essential for a natural result, so the best outcomes often combine both. See maxillofacial prosthetics.
