For head & neck surgeons and oncologists

Pre- and post-surgical prosthetic planning, obturators and post-cancer rehabilitation. See post-cancer rehabilitation and maxillofacial prosthetics.

Surgical oncology

Referral before surgery is ideal for planned maxillectomy, mandibulectomy, rhinectomy, orbital exenteration or auricular resection. A pre-operative visit allows:

  • Dental assessment and treatment of teeth that affect the surgical plan
  • Impressions or scans for a surgical (immediate) obturator, ready for placement at surgery
  • Discussion of the planned defect, including preserving teeth that help retain a prosthesis, where oncologically appropriate
  • Planning for implant-retained options and later rehabilitation

Radiation oncology

  • Dental assessment before radiotherapy, with extraction of teeth with poor long-term outlook in the field and time to heal before radiotherapy starts
  • Preventive care: fluoride, oral hygiene instruction and dry-mouth management
  • Trismus prevention advice
  • Ongoing dental and prosthodontic care during and after treatment, with caution around irradiated bone

For general dentists

Complex implant, full mouth rehabilitation, denture and TMJ cases, as well as patients needing maxillofacial prostheses.

  • Treatment stage: before or after surgery or radiotherapy
  • Patient consent to share the referral, and a contact number
